The number of Korean students in the United States accounts for nearly 14 percent of the foreign students there, the second largest foreign students’ group, the U.S. Immigration office said Sunday.
According to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a total of 101,428 Koreans were staying in America on a student visa as of July 1, forming 13.8 percent of the 733,430 non-U.S. students in the country.
Chinese students were the largest ethnic group with 118,506. India ranked third with 100,057, followed by Canada with 29,185 and Japan with 29,068, the ICE said.
By major, business administration was the most studied subject among foreign students, with 20 percent of the total selecting the subject as a major. Engineering was the second most popular as 13.5 percent of foreign students are studying it.
California has the largest number of foreign students at 123,577, followed by New York, Texas and Massachusetts. Also, 69 percent of the foreign students are studying for university degrees and the rest are taking language courses, attending vocational colleges and elementary and secondary schools.
