God cursed snakes twice: one in the Garden of Eden and the other in Korea.
Since the ancient Korean wisdom taught Korean men that snakes are “natural Viagra,” they have been quietly seeking out the species as a rare delicacy, despite the fact that some of them are venomous and could be fatal.
Under the current law, many snakes are designated as endangered species. A person, found to have violated the law, for instance, could be subject up to two-year prison term.
But the law couldn’t serve as an adequate barrier against Korean men’s search for sexual vitality, according to the Hankook Ilbo newspaper.
Recently, some TV celebrities openly praised (with some humor included) how good the snake soup is for men’s health.
Their public remarks made the government antsy, fearing that there may be a surge for demand for snakes.
Since mid-May, the authorities have been cracking down on restaurants that serve snake soups illegally. Not an easy task though.
Many of these restaurants are underground, not to mention, some of them are in the mountains.
The business works like this. Potential customers give them a call, choose a snake, pay the money online, and visit the remote mountain to pick up their Viagra.
Besides, some of these restaurants take advantage of legal loopholes, with some preemptively registering with the local authorities to breed snakes legally, while hiding unlawful snakes underground places, it said.
