We will embarrass Brazil: North Korean coach

North Korean coach Kim Jung-hoon showed confidence for his team's first game against Brazil in Group G at the 2010 World Cup scheduled for early on June 16.

This is North Korea's first appearance in the World Cup since 1966.

"We will embarrass the Brazilian team," Kim said in an interview with FIFA, Monday.

"I acknowledge that all of our competitors are strong. Every game will not be easy to win. But, we will do our best and go on to the 16-team tournament," Kim added.

In 1966, the North Korean team went on to the quarter-finals, edging out Italy 1:0. The players snatched the victory by forming a solid defense line to thwart Italy's vigorous attacks and conducting fast counterattacks. Kim will seemingly employ similar tactics at this World Cup.

"Most football fans say we will lose all three games in the first round against Brazil, Portugal and Ivory Coast. Despite the grim prospect, we will not shrink nor play passively at all. We will rather play much more aggressively so as to threaten our opponents," Kim said.

North Korean center forward Jung Dae-se, 26, seems to be in good condition and to have the highest instinct for goals. The star player scored several goals during friendly matches. He will be a lonely striker near the Brazilian penalty area in the North Korean formation of 5-4-1.

Jung's partner Hong Young-jo, 28, is poised to strike by penetrating through empty spaces behind Brazilian defenders, created by Jung.

"Brazil is superior to us in neutral aspect. But, it is not so easy to predict results in football games," said Hong.

North Korea has another leading player in reserve in case Jung and Hong fail to produce synergy effects. The player is joker Cho Geum-chul who put a ball into the net during a game against Turkmenistan at the 2010 AFC Challenge Cup, last February. He is often compared to the unforgettable Park Doo-ik who scored the winning goal against Italy in 1966.

北 김정훈 감독, "브라질 당황케 하겠다"

44년 만에 월드컵 무대를 밟는 북한 대표팀의 김정훈 감독이 브라질과의 G조 예선 첫 경기에 강한 자신감을 드러냈다.

북한 대표팀 김정훈 감독은 14일(한국시간) FIFA와의 인터뷰에서 "브라질을 당황케 만들겠다"고 말했다.

김정훈 감독은 북한이 속한 G조에 대해서도 입을 열었다. "G조에 속한 브라질, 포르투갈, 코트디부아르 모두 강팀으로 쉽지 않은 경기가 예상된다. 그러나 우리는 최선을 다할 것이다. 조별 예선에서 반드시 좋은 성적을 거두겠다"고 밝혔다.

북한 대표팀은 1966년, 잉글랜드 월드컵에서 이탈리아를 1-0으로 꺾고 8강에 진출하는 이변을 낳았다. 당시에 먼저 수비를 견고히 다지고 공격수에게 한번에 찔러 주는 빠른 역습이 제대로 먹혔다. 김정훈 감독 역시 이번 월드컵에서 이러한 작전을 구상할 것으로 보인다.

김정훈 감독은 "세계 축구팬 모두 북한이 3전 전패를 당할 것이라고 예상한다. 이에 북한 대표팀은 소극적인 움직임이 아닌 오히려 공격적인 모습으로 상대를 위협하겠다"며 출사표를 던졌다.

북한 대표팀 공격의 핵 정대세(가와사키 프론탈레)는 최근 평가전에서 골 맛을 보면서 감각이 절정에 올라있다. 브라질전에 나설것으로 예상되는 5-4-1포메이션의 최전방에 정대세가 위치해 상대 수비수들의 집중 견제가 예상된다. 이를 뒤에서 홍영조(FK 로스토프)가 뒷공간을 노려 골을 터트린다는 전략이다.

홍영조는 FIFA와의 인터뷰에서 "브라질이 객관적인 전력상 북한보다 앞서는 것은 사실이다. 그러나 축구 경기에서 예상한다는 것은 굉장히 힘들다"며 브라질에 도전장을 내밀었다.

북한 대표팀은 만약에 정대세와 홍영조가 막힐 경우 북한은 조커로 조금철(4.25) 카드도 염두에 두고 있는 것으로 보인다. 아시아 예선 UAE 전과 투르크메니스탄전에서 골을 터트린 바 있는 조금철은 1966년 이탈리아전에서 골을 넣은 박두익과 비교되며 제2의 박두익이라고 불린다.
