TOEIC applicants will now be able to take the exam on Saturdays. Normally, the U.S.-based test developer, Educational Testing Service (ETS) and the Korean importer of the English test, YBM Sisa, run a regular exam only on one Sunday each month.

Under the plan, they will run the first Saturday test on Aug. 7. It is the first time for the test organizer to allow its regular exam on Saturday since the test was introduced here in 1982, the YBM Sisa said.

"There are many test applicants who have been unable to take the TOEIC exam on Sunday for religious and other reasons," a spokesman at YBM Sisa said. The test organizer plans to gradually expand the Saturday test according to feedback from test takers.

The number of Korean taking TOEIC, short for Test of English for International Communication, is increasing, with annual applicants reaching 2 million.



토익 시험, 토요일도 치뤄

매달 일요일 한번만 볼 수 있었던 토익(TOEIC)이 이제 토요일에도 볼 수 있게 됐다.
1982년 도입된 이 토익 시험의 새로운 계획에 따르면 8월 7일에 첫 토요일 시험을 치루게 된다고 대행업체인 YMB 시사가 밝혔다.

“많은 사람들이 일요일 종교나 다른 문제들로 토익 시험을 치룰 수 없었다” 고 YBM 시사의 직원이 말했다.

YBM측은 수험생의 반응을 보고 점차 시험 기회를 확대할 계획이라고 말했다.
토익은 외국인대상 영어시험으로 한국에서만 응시자들이 연 200만 명으로 늘었다.
