A 22-year-old man was found to have cut off two of his fingers to in an attempt to dodge military service and receive an insurance payment, police said Tuesday.
According to the Yangsan Police Station in South Gyeonggnam Province, the man asked one of his friends to cut off two fingers on his left hand with a fodder chopper at a hotel in Yangsan on July 26. He reported to the police that it was a burglar who cut his fingers off. He was exempted from mandatory military service.
However, the police found no bloodstains or any evidence of the incident at the alleged crime scene and started an investigation. Detectives also found that the offender was seeking a 34-million-won insurance payment for the injury.
The police requested that the prosecution file a warrant to detain the man and booked his friend.
