TV Makers Issue 3D Health Warning

Although major television makers are rushing to produce 3D TVs, they are bound to be less than forthcoming with some of the side effects such as potential health hazards.

Samsung Electronics, the global electronics giant, came out with one warning. LG Electronics is already letting the consumers know of them.

Samsung has recently issued a health warning about the potential dangers of watching 3D television.

It says pregnant women, the elderly, children and those suffering from serious medical conditions are among a wide range of people said to be at risk.

Sleep deprivation or consumption of alcohol while watching 3D programs could be unsafe, Samsung said on its Australian Web site, recently.

Even watching 3D programs for too long could cause confusion, nausea, dizziness or convulsions, according to Samsung.

It was the first warning of its kind since the firm made a massive pitch for 3D TV late last year.

"Cautious but pre-emptive approaches are needed as watching 3D programs is a totally new experience for people," a company spokeswoman said, Sunday.

LG has put a notice on its packaging over the possible health risks in 3D TVs.

It said children aged less than 5 years should be limited in watching 3D programs and added viewing could hurt their eyes.

"The warnings are aiming to protect LG Electronics from any legal claims for compensation if people are adversely affected," a high-ranking company executive said.

An LG Electronics spokeswoman wasn't immediately available for comment.

The success of 3D film "Avatar" has ignited Korean TV manufacturers as well as Panasonic and Sony of Japan to heavily invest in the advanced technology and made them form a united front with content providers.

It is not immediately known how seriously foreign competitors of the two Korean TV makers are taking the issue.

Samsung hopes to sell 2 million TV sets over the next year, and Sony aims to sell 2.5 million. Global shipments could reach 4.2 million in 2010, and more than triple to 12.9 million in 2011, according to an U.S.-based market researcher iSuppli.

The demand is expected to be sparked by plans to broadcast the FIFA World Cup this summer in 3D, giving TV broadcasters a positive outlook for the sector as a potential breakthrough.

"I've decided to delay the purchasing plan to buy Samsung's 3D LED-backlit LCD TV mainly due to health risks. There is no reason to pay a premium for the set by taking the health risks," Choi Jae-ho, a 37-year-old office worker, told The Korea Times in a street interview near Samsung Electronics' headquarters in southern Seoul.

"I've recently heard about some advantages in buying 3D TVs via TV commercials. But such safety issues will need to be studied. Meanwhile, 3D TVs are too pricey. I will wait."

Samsung and LG officials say they have studied the health effects of 3D viewing and have decided it is safe to proceed.

`3D TV, 건강 해칠 수 있다’

최근 3D TV 신제품을 잇따라 선보이고 있는 삼성전자와 LG전자등 주요 TV 제조업체들이 3D TV가 건강을 해칠 수도 있다며 주의사항 알리기에 적극 나섰다.

삼성전자 호주 법인은 웹싸이트에서 ``과도한 3D TV 시청은 어지럼증, 현기증, 구토 등을 유발할 수 있다’’며 ``임산부나 노약자 또는 건강상의 질환을 앓고 있는 사람들은 3D TV 시청을 삼가해야 할 것’’이라고 경고했다.

삼성전자는 또 이와 함께 컨디션이 좋지 않거나 잠이 부족한 사람, 술을 마신 사람에 대해서도 일부 3D 영상을 권장하지 않는다고 덧붙였다.

회사 관계자는 이에 대해 ``3D TV의 부작용이 명확히 확인된 것은 아니지만 발생 가능성이 충분한 만큼 선행적 조치를 취한 것’’이라고 말했다.

3D TV시장을 놓고 물러설 수 없는 승부를 벌이고 있는 LG전자 역시 임산부 등의 3D TV 시청을 제한할 것과 함께, 정상시력 발달에 장애가 될 수 있다며 `5살 이하 어린이들의 과도한 3D TV 시청을 제한해 달라’는 내용을 제품 설명서에 포함시켰다.

익명을 요구한 LG전자 고위 관계자는 ``이 같은 조치들은 향후 일어날 수 있는 법적 논란의 소지를 미리 잠재우려는 업체들의 의도로 풀이될 수 있다’’며 ``과도한 입체 영상 시청이 건강을 해칠 수 있다는 우려에 대해 제조업체들이 보다 적극적으로 나서고 있다’’고 말했다.

지난해 말부터 국내 가정에 본격적으로 보급되기 시작한 3D TV는 사실 안정성 문제가 남아 있다. 입체 영상 화면에 익숙하지 않은 일반 시청자들은 3D 화면에 어지럼증을 느낄 수 있는 데다 장시간 시청자 중에서 심각한 부작용을 겪는 사례가 나타날 수 있다는 우려도 지속적으로 제기되고 있기 때문이다.

이에 따라 일부 전자업체 관계자들을 중심으로 3D TV가 건강상의 문제를 유발할 수 있다는 우려가 3D TV 시장의 지속적인 성장을 저해할 수 있다는 우려가 나오고 있다.

편광 안경을 써야 하는 불편함과 높은 가격이 3D TV의 걸림돌로 지적되고 있는 상황에서 건강과 관련한 이슈가 `직격탄’이 될 수 있다는 것.

회사원인 최재호 씨는 ``최근 입체 영상이 건강에 좋지 않을 수 있다는 우려에 3D TV 구입 시기를 미뤘다’’며 ``높은 가격을 주고 서둘러서 3D TV를 살 이유는 없는 것 같다’’고 말했다.
