HS Lantern Festival Extended Until Sunday

Listen

The Seoul Lantern Festival, illuminating the downtown Cheonggye Stream, will be extended to Sunday.

Considering the growing interest, the city decided to extend the festival, which was originally scheduled to end Nov. 15. The lantern festival is popular among families, couples and photographers.

There are lanterns in the shapes of tigers and Haechi (Seoul’s mascot). One lantern came from the Aomori Nebuta Festival in Japan.

“During weekends, more than 100,000 people visit the festival and 50,000 on weekdays despite the cold weather,” a city official said. “We consulted with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Visit Korea Committee and decided to extend the festival a week.”
