Yoo Young-ae, the mother of the late actor Ahn Jae-hwan, died of liver cancer at a hospital in Gyeonggi Province Thursday morning, less than two years after her son was found dead of an apparent suicide. She was 73.
The late actor's mother collapsed recently after she suffering physical pain stemming from the loss of her son over the last 18 months, her family members said.
They said she has refused to get treatment as she had been overwhelmed by the loss of her son.
Ahn's elder sister, Ahn Kwang-sook, recently told a monthly magazine: "My mother started suffering stomachaches two months ago and a big lump was found."
She said her mother left a letter for Ahn's widow, comedian and TV/radio host Jung Sun-hee.
"Before my mother collapsed, she left a letter to Jung Sun-hee. She told us to give the letter to Jung if she came, and if not, to cremate it along with her," she said.
The contents of the letter have not been made public.
Jung has refused to meet Ahn's family members, who have demanded an explanation of what she knew about factors behind Ahn's death. It had been rumored that Ahn took his own life after he borrowed a huge sum of money from loan sharks.
Jung, who left her MBC radio show in 1998 when listeners complained about critical remarks she made regarding the protest of U.S. beef imports, has been hosting an SBS radio program since last April.
Jung hosted the two-hour show Thursday without mentioning the death of Ahn's mother. Whether she will appear at the funeral ceremony has become a matter of public debate
Her husband died in September 2008, and her best friend, actress Choi Jin-sil, committed suicide two months later.

고 안재환의 어머니 유영애씨가 간암 투병중 25일 오전 세상을 떠났다. 향년 73세.
고인의 유족 측은 이날 오전 7시 유씨가 경기도 부천 순천향병원에서 사망했다고 전했다.
고인은 2008년 아들인 안재환을 잃고 고통의 시간을 보내오다 두달 전 간암 4기 판정을 받았다. 특히 아들을 잃은 상실감에 치료를 거부해오다 최근 병세가 급격히 악화됐던 것으로 알려졌다.
안재환의 큰누나 안광숙씨는 "어머니가 돌아가시기 전 정선희에게 편지를 남겼다"고 밝혔다. 유씨는 유언으로 정선희가 찾아오면 편지를 전하고 찾아오지 않으면 자신과 함께 화장하라고 당부한 것으로 알려졌다.
한편, 정선희가 유씨의 사망 소식을 알고 있는지는 확실하지 않다. 정선희는 이날 SBS 라디오 '정선희의 러브 FM'을 예정대로 진행했으며, 고인을 언급하는 발언은 하지 않았다.
이에 따라 유씨가 정선희에 남긴 편지의 내용과 함께 정선희가 유씨의 빈소를 찾을 지가 관심을 모으고 있다.
