Geum Na-na, the 2002 Miss Korea known for possessing both ``brains and beauty,’’ has been accepted to Ph.D. programs at Harvard and Johns Hopkins University.
The 27-year-old previously made headlines for gaining admission to prestigious undergraduate schools, including Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She graduated from Harvard with a bachelor’s degree in biology.
During a recent telephone interview with The Hankook Ilbo, sister paper of The Korea Times, Geum said she has qualified to become a doctorate candidate in three departments: epidemiology at Harvard, and epidemiology and cellular & molecular medicine at Johns Hopkins. For the medical program, she was also offered a full ride, which would cover not only tuition but also living expenses for five years.
After graduating cum laude from Harvard College, Geum is currently working toward a master’s degree in nutrition at Columbia University. She will be completing the accelerated one-year course in August.
``I applied to study epidemiology because I felt that’s where my strengths lie, while my interest in cellular and molecular medicine stems from my longtime wish to research obesity,’’ said Geum. She added that she applied to the Johns Hopkins medical program because she felt that it is a highly practical field of study that allows the clinical application of basic medical research.
She remains undecided about which program she would enter. ``I am going to take time to think about it. I have until April 15 to decide so I am going to discuss it with my professors,’’ she said.
Geum was a pre-med student at Kyungpook National University when she won the Miss Korea pageant. Even though she earned impressive undergraduate grades at Harvard she was rejected by 26 medical schools.
Her original plans for medical school failed but she wasted no time sulking in disappointment and pursued an alternative course. And she succeeded.
``Pursuing my second choice enabled me to crawl through the dark and mature as an individual, as I discovered what it is that I really like and get back on my feet.”
The beauty said working toward a doctoral degree means truly plunging into academia, and she wants to save her career plans for later. ``Right now cultivating my skills is my top priority, and deciding what I want to do professionally can wait.’’
Though Geum has become a role model for many youths, she said the battle within is a never-ending process. ``I think I will be fighting with myself until the day I die. I try to accept this and control my mind.’’
Just like the title of her essay book, ``Na-na’s Never Ending Story,’’ she continues to march forward to take on new challenges.

금나나 하버드 박사과정 장학생
미국 하버드대와 MIT 동시합격으로 화제를 모았던 2002 미스코리아 진 금나나(27)씨가 최근 하버드대와 존스홉킨스대 대학원 박사과정에 장학생으로 합격했다.
지난해 9월부터 컬럼비아대 영양대학원 석사과정을 이수해 온 금씨는 10일 전화 통화에서 하버드대 보건대학원과 존스홉킨스 보건대학원 질병 역학 (Epidemiology) 부문, 존스홉킨스 의대 세포분자의학(Cellular and Molecular Medicine) 등 3개 박사과정에 동시 합격했다고 밝혔다.
이 가운데 하버드대와 존스홉킨스 의대는 5년 전액 장학생(full funding)으로 선발돼 등록금 면제는 물론 매달 일정액의 생활비까지 지원받는다고 덧붙였다. 금씨는 하버드대 학부를 우수 졸업(Cum Laude)한 데 이어 컬럼비아대학원 석사과정도 학점집중 이수로 1년 만인 올 8월말 마칠 예정이다.
금씨는 "질병역학분야에 지원한 것은 나의 재능이 거기에 있다고 판단한 데 따른 것이고, 세포분자의학에 끌린 것은 예전부터 비만을 연구하고 싶었기 때문"이라고 말했다.
존스홉킨스 의대의 기초의학 과정을 지원한 것은 연구실에서 이루어진 기초의학 발견을 임상의학으로 효과적으로 적용될 수 있도록 하는 실용적인 학문으로 의학연구의 최종단계이기 때문에 호기심이 생겼다고 그는 덧붙였다.
금씨는 "어떤 선택을 할지는 시간을 두고 결정할 계획"이라며 "내달 15일까지 결정하면 되기 때문에 그때까지 교수님들과 상의할 참"이라고 말했다.
금씨는 경북대 의예과 재학 중이던 2002년 미스코리아 진에 당선된 뒤 주위의 기대나 예상과 달리 하버드대 진학을 선택했다. 우수학생으로 졸업한 뒤 외과의사의 꿈을 위해 지원한 26개 의대에서 외국인학생에 대한 눈에 보이지 않는 차별 등으로 모두 외면당하는 아픔을 겪기도 했다.
이날 금씨는 박사과정이야말로 진짜 공부의 시작이라고 강조했다. 당장은 박사과정 학업에 전념하고 이후의 일은 그때 생각하겠다는 것. "우선 실력을 다지는 것이 최선이고, 사회에 진출할 때 무엇을 할 것인가는 그때 결정해도 늦지 않다"고 말했다.
빼어난 미모에다 미 명문대 진학, 명문대 박사과정 장학생 입학 등 부러운 이력과 성취에도 불구하고 그는 "공부할 때 스스로의 능력에 대해 부족함과 한계를 느낄 때 힘들었다"며 자신과의 싸움에 대한 어려움을 토로했다.
"내 자신과의 싸움은 죽을 때까지 계속되는 것인 것 같아요. 그래서 그 자체를 인정하고, 조급한 마음을 버리려고 노력하죠. 공부라는 것은 노력한 만큼 나오는, 무엇보다도 정직한 것이니 하루하루 최선을 다하다 보면 저도 모르는 사이에 제 능력도 향상되고 있으리라 믿어요."
금씨의 우선 목표(플랜 A)는 의대 진학이었지만, 그 목표에 좌절한 뒤 보내야 했던 낙담의 시간에도 새롭게 끌리는 대상(플랜 B)에 대한 모색을 지속했다고 말했다. 그리고 이렇게 멋지게 성공한 것이다.
그는 "제게 플랜B란 어둠 속을 항해하면서 인간적으로 한층 성숙해지고 정말 내가 좋아하는 것이 무엇인지 발견하고 다시 일어서게 해 준 긴 항해의 과정"이라고 말했다. 그의 책 제목(나나의 네버엔딩 스토리)처럼 새로운 취향과 목표를 향한 그의 항해는 이어질 것이다.
