Christian and Buddhist communities are at odds over whether ceremonial gestures during sports matches should be allowed.

The debate was ignited as the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism asked the Korea Football Association (KFA) to ban soccer players from practicing prayer gestures after scoring a goal.

The Korea Association of Church Communication believes that such a ban would be against the freedom of religion. It said, "Prohibiting athletes from making praying gestures not only infringes upon their freedom of religion and but also suppresses their courage in expressing their beliefs.

"Football players are not public figures and displaying their ceremonial gestures is completely up to them."

It also added that nobody complained when figure skating champion Kim Yu-na, who is Catholic, made the sign of the cross before skating at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

The Jogye Order expressed the hope that such "goal ceremonies" would not be made during the World Cup finals, which will start from June 12 in South Africa.

It also took note of the fact that skating commentator Jaegal Sung-yeol commented that Lee Seung-hoon's gold medal in the 10,000 speed skating event was "God's will."

The commentator later apologized to the Buddhist community for the remark.

`골 세리모니’에 불교-기독교 공방

스포츠 경기의 `골 세리모니’를 놓고 불교계와 기독교계가 날선 공방을 벌이고 있다.

이번 논란은 최근 불교조계종이 대한축구협회에 축구선수들이 경기 중 골을 넣은 뒤 행하는 `기도 세리머니’를 자제하도록 요청하면서 불거졌다.

한국교회언론회는 9일 논평을 내고, 최근 불교조계종 종교평화위원회가 월드컵 축구 경기에서 골을 성공시킨 선수가 ‘기도 세리머니’를 자제토록 요구한 공문을 대한축구협회에 보낸 것에 대해 개인의 신앙 표현을 제한하는 전근대적 발상이라고 비판했다.

교회언론회는 “축구 선수의 ‘기도 세리머니’를 막는 것은 개인의 신앙과 (이를 표현하는) 용기까지 통제하려는 것”이라며 “축구 선수는 불교에서 종교편향의 타깃으로 삼는 공직자도 아닐 뿐 아니라 선수들이 세리머니를 하는 것은 전적으로 본인의 의사”라고 주장했다.

논평은 이와 함께 밴쿠버동계올림픽에서 김연아 선수가 경기 전 성호를 긋는 모습도 있었으나 누구도 이를 문제삼지 않았다는 사실을 덧붙이기도 했다.

앞서 조계종 종교평화위원회는 지난 3일 축구협회에 발송한 공문에서 밴쿠버동계올림픽에서 제갈성렬 SBS 해설위원이 이승훈 선수의 금메달 획득소식을 전하며 “주님의 뜻”이라고 발언, 물의를 일으킨 일을 언급하며 사전 예방교육을 통해 월드컵에 나서는 선수들이 ‘기도 세리머니’ 등의 종교 행위를 자제토록 해달라는 내용의 공문을 보냈다.
