Korean Jobseekers Head to Sea

Listen

As the Korean job market remains tight, some jobseekers give up their hope of working on this land. They decided to jump off to sea to find a new opportunity to become a sailor.

According to government data, for the 100 slots available for the government-funded training program for navigation officers and engineers, over 300 people with higher education degrees, applied, Yonhap said.

Unlike before, among the 100 successful applicants, 73 have college degrees, including graduates from the nation's top schools as well as some even with graduate degrees, reflecting that as the employment situation remains tight, people are turning to opportunities that are usually neglected by educational high-achievers in the past.

Among the 73 college graduates selected, 20 of them were also graduates from colleges and universities in Seoul, which requires higher college entrance exam scores.

These successful applicants will go through a six-month training, all government funded, before they begin to work as junior navigation officers or engineers for Koreans ships sail abroad.
