Single Korean women in their 30s are refusing, not unable, to get married, claims a new book, "The Real Reason Why Single Women in their 30s Refuse Marriage.
Traditionally, in Korea a woman over 30 are subject to great social prejudice if they are not married. Maybe, she is too visually unattractive; maybe she has a disagreeable character, or "something is wrong with her," the usual interpretations went.
But Hankyoreh newspaper said in a review piece for the book that for the first time in history, a woman in their 30s in Korea has "freedom to get married" and also "freedom not to get married."
"Those single women in their 30s don't get married not because they are selfish and don't want to sacrifice their life for child upbringing, or not because they are feminist warriors," it said.
"Rather, it's a natural product of the society that is changing while the marriage custom hasn't changed."
These single women are mostly born in the 1970s. Many of them were class head when they were in primary school. They have continued to work after graduating college.
"Women today are professionally, economically more competitive than before∼ In a sense, their refusal of marriage is a 'warning' to the Korean society calling for change to the marriage system that is still male-dominated," it concluded.
