Prosecutors who were charged with leaking unverified rumors in the lead-up to the suicide of former President Roh Moo-hyun were exonerated Wednesday.
The Seoul Central District Court dropped charges of breach in confidentiality against a special investigation team, which investigated Roh on allegations that he received bribes from Park Yeon-cha, the CEO of a shoemaking business.
The court ruled that the prosecutors’ actions were part of efforts to acknowledge the public’s interest.
The lawsuit was brought by the main opposition Democratic Party. The prosecutors had been giving daily briefings on the progress of the investigations into the former President from March. Roh left a note that he was under great pressure from daily revelations, before jumping to his death in May.
In briefings, prosecutors claimed Roh’s daughter bought a house in the U.S., among other things. Some of their allegations were not proven, however, they claimed their actions were in the public interest.
