The Seoul Central District Court ordered the management of the Lotte Station Building Monday to pay 1.1 billion won to a 29-year-old Kim, who was paralyzed from the waist down when he fell down a broken escalator there.
According to the court, Kim fell down an escalator linking Lotte Department Store and Yeongdeungpo station in Seoul in September 2008, when the machine suddenly stopped and then immediately began moving in the reverse direction. He fell to the ground, leaving his lower body paralyzed.
The court ruled in favor of the victim, saying the driving chain in the machine was broken and caused the accident.
