Hyangilam, a well-known Buddhist temple in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province, was severely damaged in a fire that broke out early Sunday morning, but no one was harmed. The ancient temple was designated a local treasure and had been a favorite tourist spot for New Year's sunrises.
The fire was extinguished after three hours, but damages of 600 million won were incurred. Three of the eight main buildings were completely destroyed. The cost of the damage is expected to increase as many important Buddhist relics were ruined, according to firefighters.
Around 20 tourists and followers of the Buddhist faith were present at the time of the fire, but they successfully fled the site.
Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire. Authorities said that some of the damaged halls were devoid of sprinklers and basic fire safety facilities.
There were many visitors at the temple ahead of the New Year. Around 50,000 to 80,000 tourists visit the temple to see the sunrise around this time.
Yeosu city was planning a New Year's event at the temple starting Dec. 21 through Jan.1. Despite the fire, the event will likely take place, an official with the city government said.
