Girls aged under 18 will not be able to have breast enhancement in Italy.
Italy is to introduce legislation that will make it illegal for girls under 18 to have breast enhancement or other plastic surgery, Daily Telegraph reports.
More than 10,000 teenage girls had surgery in 2008 and many of them have gotten the operation as a gift from their parents. There are a growing number of cases where unauthorized surgeons have caused problems.
Francesca Martini, an undersecretary at Italy's welfare ministry, said, "This legislation is primarily aimed at the growing number of girls under 18 who have breast enhancement surgery for fashion reasons and have no idea of the risks involved. Banning under 18's from having the surgery is also a good idea because they are too young to be operated on."
According to the statistics from the Italian Society of Plastic Surgeons, there are around 85,000 breast enhancement operations a year in Italy, of which 70 percent are for aesthetic reasons and 30 percent follow cancer treatment.

프란체스카 마티니 복지부 차관은 "이번 입법이 미용 이유에서의 성형수술을 근절하기 위한 것"이라며 "특히 18세 이하 소녀들의 가슴성형이 늘어나는 것을 막기 위한 조치"라고 설명했다. 그는 "대다수 청소년들이 수술의 위험을 인지하지 못하고 있다"며 "수술 받기에 너무 어린18세 이하의 성형수술을 금하는 것은 좋은 아이디어다"라고 덧붙였다.
이탈리아 성형외과협회 통계에 따르면 이탈리아에서는 매년 약 8만 5,000명이 가슴 성형 을 하고 있는데, 이 가운데 70%는 미용 목적이며 나머지 30%는 암 치료를 위한 것으로 나타났다.
