A man in his 20s was given a six-month ban from Wigston Library in Leicestershire, United Kingdom, because staff became fed up with visitors objecting to his smell," according to The Sun, a daily tabloid newspaper.

Officials at Leicestershire County say they gave Stuart Penmen, 27, a number of warnings and even provided him with hygiene tips. Margaret Bellamy, head of library services for Leicestershire County Council, said, "He has been using the library for a while and we've been getting complaints about his personal hygiene for about a year."

Penman hit back at the ban insisting, "I have a bath every day but I realize my feet do smell. I live with my mum, who smokes, so I smell like cigarettes."

His girlfriend, 23-year-old Laila Spencer, added, "It's very unfair to ban Stuart. He tries his best to keep clean but he does have a bit of a problem sometimes."

레이터셔 군 관계자들은 펜멘에게 몇 차례의 주의와 위생에 관한 정보도 제공했다고 말했다. 레이터셔 주의회 도서관 총책임자 마가렛 벨라미에는 스튜어트가 한동안 도서관에 나왔고 1년간 그의 위생청결문제로 항의를 받아왔다고 말했다.

하지만 펜멘은 "발쪽에서 조금 냄새가 나는 것 같지만 매일 목욕을 하고 담배를 피우는 어머니와 같이 살아서 몸에서 담배 냄새가 난다" 고 주장했다.

그의 여자친구인 라일라 스펜서 (23)는 "스튜어트의 도서관 출입을 막는 것은 부당"하다며 "가끔씩 냄새가 날 때도 있지만 매일 청결을 유지하려고 노력한다"고 덧붙였다.
