Belongings of legendary actress Audrey Hepburn (1929-93), such as a handwritten letter on her decision to call off her marriage and wedding dress that she failed to wear due to break-up, have been sold at high prices in auction in London.
The daily Times in Britain reported on its Web site Wednesday that the letters sent to her friend Tanja Star-Busmann was sold for 3,800 pounds (approximately 7 million won) at the Kerry Taylor Auctions Tuesday.
In the same auction, 48 pieces of her outfits, including an ivory wedding dress that she failed to use, were sold for about 268,000 pounds (approximately 500 million won).
The letters include one in which the actress was obliged to end her affair with James Hanson, a British businessman to whom she had been engaged for more than one year
The letter, which was sent to Tanja, contains the "tremendous disappointment" of Hanson on the fact that Hepburn's wedding was postponed. "We are going to New York on the 30th and we hope to have a little time there in which to relax and make our plans for the wedding, some time later this year," said Hanson, the powerful financier of Hepburn.
The letters had been owned by Tanja Star-Busmann, who became a long-time friend of Hepburn since the two met in London for the first time before she became a star.
Among those on sale was a Givenchy Chantilly lace cocktail dress worn by Hepburn in 1966 in How to Steal a Million. It fetched 60,000 pounds (about 110 million won) ― three times its upper estimate.

친구에게 파혼 결정을 내린 편지와 파혼으로 입지 못한 웨딩드레스 등 전설의 여배우 오드리 헵번의 소장품이 런던의 경매에서 고가에 낙찰됐다.
9일 영국의 일간 더 타임스 온라인판에 따르면 헵번이 친구 탄자 스타-버스먼에게 보낸 편지들이 8일 런던의 케리 테일러 옥션에서 3,800 파운드 (700만원 상당)에 팔렸다.
동일 경매에서 아이보리색 웨딩드레스를 포함한 48벌의 의상은 모두 26만8천여파운드 (5억원 상당)에 낙찰됐다.
이번에 낙찰된 서한에는 헵번이 약혼자인 영국의 사업가 제임스 핸슨과의 결혼을 미루다 관계를 끝내고 나서 겪은 착잡한 심경들이 담겼다.
또한 핸슨이 탄자에게 보낸 편지들에는 "우리 둘은 뉴욕에 가서 숨을 돌린 뒤 결혼 계획을 다시 한번 차근차근 논의할 것"이라는 내용과 함께 결혼 연기에 대해 "매우 실망했다"는 핸슨의 토로도 담겨있다.
서한들은 헵번의 오랜 친구인 탄자 스타-버스먼이 소장하고 있던 것들로 헵번과 스타-버스먼은 헵번이 스타가 되기 전 런던에서 처음 만난 뒤 평생 친분을 유지해왔다.
헵번을 위해 의상을 만들었던 디자이너 지방시의 작품 가운데 헵번이 1966년 영화 '백만 달러의 사랑'에서 입고 나온 칵테일 드레스는 예상 경매가보다 3배 이상 높은 6만 파운드 (1억1천만원)에 낙찰되기도 했다.
