U.S. President Barack Obama seemed to have got some hint from South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on how to improve learning ability of American students.

"I just want to mention the importance not only of students but also of parents" as in the case of South Korea, Obama said in a Washington forum of the "Educate to Innovate" Campaign for U.S. excellence in science, technology, engineering and math education Monday.

"He said even if somebody is dirt poor, they are insisting that their kids are getting the best education," the president was quoted as saying of Lee, although the latter said that the demanding parents are South Korea's biggest education "problem."

Obama cited his conversation with President Lee during his trip in Seoul last week in one of the four-leg Asian tour which also brought him to Japan, China and Singapore.

Obama also reiterated the importance of parents' role, saying, "The South Korean economy has grown enormously over the last 40 years" thanks to education enthusiasm of parents.

In the U.S., a major challenge is to revive the interest, opportunities and abilities in math and science, Obama said.

The Educate to Innovate Campaign seeks to bring together teachers, parents, businesses and even the "Sesame Street"gang to promote match and science learning, CNN quoted Obama as saying.

So far, the private sector has committed $260 million to the campaign, and corporate giants, including Intel, Xerox, Kodak and Time Warner Cable, have signed, the president said.

Specific programs include a two-year initiative on "Sesame Street" to teach kids about math and science, an after-school program focusing on robotics and a national "lab" day to provide millions of students with hands-on scientific learning, Obama said.

오바마 한국 `교육열' 소개

버락 오바마 미 대통령이 미국학생들의 학습 능력 증진 방법과 관련해 이명박 대통령으로부터 암시를 받은 듯 하다.

오바마 대통령은 월요일 워싱턴에서 열린 과학, 기술, 공학, 수학 교육에서 미국의 우월성을 위한"교육 혁신 운동" 포럼에서 한국에서 처럼"학생 뿐 아니라 학부모의 중요성을 언급하고 싶다"고 말했다.

이 대통령은 요구가 많은 부모들이 한국 교육의 최대 "문제"라고 지적했는데 오바마 대통령은 "한국 사람들은 아무리 가난해도 자식들을 최상의 교육을 받게 하려 한다고 한 이 대통령의 말"을 전했다.

오바마 대통령은 지난주 일본 중국 등 아시아 3개국 순방국 중 하나인 한국에 머물면서 이 대통령과 나눈 대화를 언급했다.

오바마는 또한 한국 경제는 부모들의 교육열 덕택으로 지난 40년 동안 엄청나게 성장했다고 부모 역할의 중요성을 반복했다.

미국에서 주된 과제는 수학과 과학에서 흥미와 기회 그리고 능력을 회복시키는 것이라고 미 대통령은 말했다.

CNN은 교육혁신운동은 교사, 학부모, 기업 심지어는 "세사미 스트리트"족을 한데로 묶어 수학과 과학 교육을 증진시키기 위한 것이라고 오바마의 말을 인용해 보도했다.
