Former gangster leader Kim Tae-chon was released from prison Tuesday, ending his one-year prison term after being convicted on charges of giving bribes to prison officers in exchange for receiving special treatment in jail.
The Ministry of Justice said the 60-year-old, former boss of a Gwangju-based gangster group, was released from a prison in Busan.
In 2006, Kim was indicted on charges of giving out 20 million won to prison officers in exchange for looking the other way over perks he enjoyed while being incarcerated: using the telephone without being monitored and getting cigarettes between 2001 and 2002.
He saw his term frequently suspended while he was out on bail for health reasons, which stretched his one-year term to three years, the ministry said.

감옥에서 특별대우를 받은 대가로 교도관에게 뇌물을 제공한 혐의로 복역 중이던 전 조직폭력단 두목 김태촌 (60)이 1년의 형기를 마치고 화요일 감옥에서 풀려났다.
법무부는 광주에 기반을 둔 조폭 보스 김태촌이 부산에서 석방됐다고 발표했다.
김태촌은 복역 중이던 2001년과 2002년 감시 없이 전화를 걸거나 담배를 얻는 등의 특혜를 받은 대가로 교도관에게 2,000만원을 준 혐의로 2006년 기소됐었다.
법무부는 김태촌의 복역이 건강상의 이유로 자주 정지 돼 1년의 형기가 3년으로 늘어났다고 밝혔다.
