Koreans 3rd Largest Group in US Colleges

By Kang Shin-who
Staff Reporter

The number of Korean college students in the U.S. has reached a record high of 75,065, while Korea has a total of 50,591 foreigners studying at colleges.

The Institute of International Education (IIE), a U.S.-based education and training organization, announced Tuesday that Koreans formed the third largest group of international students in the 2008-2009 academic year at American colleges after Indians and Chinese.

The number of Korean students rose 8.6 percent from the previous year, accounting for 11.2 percent of the total.

According to the report, India remains in the first place with 103,260 for the eighth consecutive year, up 9 percent to 103,260. Students from China increased 21 percent, ranking second for the second consecutive years with 98,510.

It said Canada, the only non-Asian country in the top five, rose to fourth with an increase of 2 percent to 29,697, surpassing Japan, now fifth after students declined for the fourth consecutive year, down 14 percent to 29,264.

Students from Taiwan fell 3 percent for sixth place with 28,065 students. The number of students from Mexico, the seventh-leading sender, remained flat this year, with a total of 14,850.

Overall, the total number of foreign students at colleges in the U.S. increased by 8 percent to an all-time high of 671,616 in the 2008-2009 academic year, the largest increase since the 1980-1981 academic year.

The number of U.S. students studying abroad was up by 8 percent at a record high 241,791 in the 2006/07 academic year, and destinations for the outgoing students are continuing to diversify.

The report was published following a survey of some 3,000 accredited U.S. higher education institutions of all types and sizes.

California is the state drawing the largest number of international students seeking degrees with 93,124, up 10 percent. New York came next with 74,934, up 7 percent and Texas with 58,188, up 12 percent.

New York City continues to be the No.1 city for foreign students with 59,322 followed by Los Angeles with 42,897.
