International high-class accommodation chain Hilton Hotels filed a complaint against a local "Hilton" motel owner.
According to the Seoul Central District Court, the HLT International, Hilton's hotel owning and operating company, sued the Hilton Motel in Busan for using its name and filed for compensation of 30 million won last week.
The Hilton company said they registered "Hilton" in 1993 and Hilton in Korean in 2007 as a service mark and thus own the exclusive right to use the name.
"Yoon violated our operating profit by employing the name of Hilton and violated the Trademark Law and Unfair Competition Prevention Law," a representative of the company said. A service mark is a trademark used to identify a service.
First started in Texas in 1919, the hotel chain owns 514 hotels worldwide. There are four in Korea including Millennium Seoul Hilton on Mt. Namsan and Grand Hilton Seoul.
