Two ceremonial guards known as Beefeaters at the historic Tower of London were sacked Wednesday for having harassed their first and only female colleague, The Associated Press reported.

The Tower of London said it conducted a thorough investigation after allegations arose that Moira Cameron, 44, was a victim of a bullying campaign by her colleagues.

It said two yeoman warders had been dismissed as a result of the probe, but the case against a third guard was not proven and the charges were dropped. They will be able to file complaints against the dismissal within a week, according to the rule involved.

The Sun newspaper earlier reported that some of Cameron's colleagues resented the attention she had received since becoming in 2007 the first female Beefeater in 522 years of male guards. Some 30 guards attract tourists at the tower.

Her uniform ― one of the most instantly recognizable symbols of Britain ― had been damaged, an entry about her on the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia was tampered with and "harassing" notes were left in her locker, the Sun said.

The guards ― all ex-military personnel ― are popularly known as "Beefeaters" because of the extra rations of meat they were given during medieval times. The yeomen of the royal guard was created in 1485 at the London Tower, which was built in 1066.

선지(紙)는 이달 초 캐머런의 동료들이 522년 동안 금녀직에 2007년 최초로 들어와 그녀가 받는 관심에 화를 냈다고 보도했었다. 30여명의 근위병이 이 탑에서 관광객을 맞고 있다.

선지는 또한 영국을 가장 즉각적으로 알아볼 수 있는 상징물의 하나인 그녀의 유니폼이 손상됐고 온라인 백화사전 위키피디아에 그녀에 관한 내용이 들어가지 못하게 방해받았으며 그녀의 사물함에 "괴롭히는" 쪽지를 남겨져 있었다고 보도했었다.

퇴역군으로 된 근위병은 중세 때 고기를 추가로 급식한 이유로 "쇠고기먹는 사람"으로 널리 알려져 있다. 지난 1066년 건립된 런던탑을 지키는 근위대는 1485년에 생겼다.
