A convicted serial murderer on death row died Sunday after a suicide attempt in his prison cell, Yonhap News Agency reported Sunday.

Jeong Nam-gyu, 40, died at 2:40 a.m. Sunday while hospitalized after trying to kill himself Saturday inside his cell at the Seoul Detention House in Uiwang, just south of Seoul.

The death row inmate hung himself using a plastic bag, according to officials. He left a memo on his notepad saying, "Life is like a cloud" and that the government has no intention to abolish capital punishment.

Jeong was convicted in 2007 and was given the death penalty for killing 13 people and injuring seven others between January 2004 and April 2006, including two children he had sexually assaulted. Many of the victims were women and children living in southwestern Seoul.

Since its foundation in 1948, South Korea has executed a total of 920 people, according to a Justice Ministry report sent to parliament. The last execution was carried out in December 1997.

There had been an unofficial moratorium on the death penalty since February 1998 when then President Kim Dae-jung ― who himself was sentenced to death in 1980 but was later pardoned ― took office.

사형수 감옥에서 자살

사형 선고를 받고 복역 중이던 한 죄수가 일요일 감옥에서 자살을 시도한 뒤 사망했다고 연합뉴스가 보도했다.

정남규 (40)는 경기도 의왕시 구치소 자신의 감방에서 토요일 자살을 시도한 뒤 병원에서 치료를 받던 중 일요일 오전 2시40분 사망했다.

관계자들에 따르면 이 사형수는 플라스틱 봉지를 이용해 목을 맨 것으로 알려졌다. 그는 노트에 남긴 메모에서 ``인생은 뜬 구름 같다''며 정부가 사형을 폐지할 의도가 없다고 주장했다.

정남규는 2004년 1월부터 2006년 4월까지 13명을 살해하고 7명을 상해한 혐의로 2007년 사형선고를 받았다. 희생자는 대부분 서울 서남부에 거주하던 여성 및 어린이들이었다.

법무부가 국회에 제출한 보고서에 따르면 한국에서 1948년 정부가 수립된 이후 사형당한 사람은 총 920명으로, 마지막 사형집행은 1997년 12월에 있었다.

자신이 1980년 사형언도를 받은 뒤 나중에 감형되는 일을 겪었던 김대중 전 대통령이 1998년 2월 취임한 이래 한국에서는 사형집행이 비공식적으로 중단된 상태다.
