Gangwon Province experienced heavy snowfall Monday as a sudden cold spell swept across the nation. Seoul experienced sub-zero temperatures for the first time this fall, according to the nation's top weather agency.

More than 40 centimeters of heavy snow fell in Gangwon, with local weather authorities expecting 2 to 5 centimeters of additional snowfall Monday afternoon.

The temperature in Seoul dropped to one degree below zero, its lowest of the season, the nation's top weather agency said.

Due to strong wind, the actual temperature felt by citizens was even lower, recording 5.3 degrees Celsius below zero in Seoul. Dongducheon, Gyeonggi Province, and Munsan and Cheorwon in Gangwon Province also recorded sub-zero temperatures.

"We will see the cold spell lingering until Tuesday, after which the temperature is expected to regain its average," an official with the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said.

Commuters were putting on extra layers of clothing and taking cabs rather than buses or the subway Monday morning.

Temperatures in Seoul Tuesday are expected to drop to seven degrees below zero, slightly lower than the day before.

There is a possibility of slight rain in Seoul, Incheon, Suwon and the western coastal region, the KMA said. During the day, it is expected to get warmer, with the temperature ranging from 8 to 16 degrees Celsius and the wind subsiding.

Seoul saw ice forming 15 days earlier than last year, but 5 days later than average.

The KMA issued an alert against the cold snap in Seoul and the rest of the country, including Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungcheong and Jeolla provinces. The alert is issued when daily temperatures drop 10 degrees or more than the previous day.

The KMA also issued a warning of heavy snowfall in six counties in the Gangwon region and the eastern coastal area.

"Due to the high atmospheric pressure expanding northwest, the temperature has dropped considerably.

Residents in mountainous regions should be more careful on roads due to the snow and the cold weather," an official at the Gangwon weather agency said.

The agency advised farmers to protect their crops.

In Seoul, commuters, some bundled up in heavy winter clothing, were seek scurrying in the cold weather on their way to work Monday in Gwanghwa-mun, central Seoul.
