Air Caledonie International, or Aircalin, has launched direct operation between Seoul and Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia.
Officials from the airline and Incheon International Airport held a ceremony celebrating the launch of the service Tuesday. Aircalin Chairman Charles Lavoix, its CEO Jean Michel Masson, and Incheon International Airport Corporation CEO Lee Jae-hee took part in the ceremony.
Operations officially began on Sunday.
Two weekly flights will head for the French overseas territory on Tuesdays and Sundays.
New Caledonia, called ``French paradise in the South Pacific Ocean,'' is located between Australia and New Zealand. The island is emerging as a new resort destination thanks to its all year round warm climate.
Aircalin is the 71st carrier operating at Incheon airport, and the service is expected to strengthen the airport's network to Oceania. So far, Korean travelers to New Caledonia had to transfer in Japan.
A 270-seat A330-200 and a 150-seat A320-200 will be used. Flight time is approximately nine and a half hours. A Korean interpreter will be onboard for Korean passengers, and Korean films will be available on the in-flight entertainment programs, as well as Korean subtitles for foreign films. Kimchi will be available for in-flight meals.
New Caledonia has gained popularity in Japan in recent years after the boom of a novel entitled ``Island Closest to Heaven,'' which featured the island.
New Caledonia has both primitive and modern looks ― native Melanesian culture remains along with untouched natural environment including emerald-colored ocean, a lagoon and rare flora and fauna, while French influence can be seen in its architecture and foods.
Various activities such as yachting, windsurfing, snorkeling, eco tours, helicopter tours and golf are available.
Aircalin, founded in 1983, operates mainly to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tahiti and Japan.
``Aircalin launched its service at this time when airlines are cutting frequencies or suspending operations on low-demand routes amid soaring fuel prices. It means we are sure of the success of the Korean market,'' an Aircalin official said.
