The Seoul city government will restore Doneuimun, one of four main gates that served as the western entrance into the old Seoul during the Joseon era (1392-1910).
A budget of 147 billion won has been allotted to reestablish the 12-meter-wide, 12-meter-tall gate and stone structure across from Gangbuk Samsung Hospital. A historical park will be created nearby to explain the history of the gate as well as the city.
Doneuimun is the only main gate that has not been restored after being destroyed under Japanese colonial rule (1910-1945). Heunginjimun, the East Gate, and Sukjeongmun, the North Gate, were restored, while Sungnyemun, the South Gate, which had been rebuilt, was destroyed again last year due to arson.The South Gate is currently being restored.
