Health authorities confirmed Wednesday influenza A caused the death of a 64-year-old woman, the eighth reported fatality nationwide.
The woman in Gangwon Province had been treated at a hospital and died of secondary complications from bacterial pneumonia brought on by the H1N1 infection.
The woman was confirmed as infected with the virus Aug. 28, with symptoms of a high fever, chills and difficulty in breathing. The hospital treated her with anti-viral medicine for five days.
There have been 9,968 reported cases of H1N1 flu so far since the first case was reported May 2.
However, considering the figure is only the reported number, there may be even more cases that the government has yet to confirm. Among current flu cases, eight patients are listed in serious condition, including three in intensive care units.
