The country's hosting of a Group of 20 economic summit will become a "historic" opportunity for Korea to join the ranks of advanced economies, President Lee Myung-bak said Monday.

"The summit will be the biggest diplomatic event in Korean history," Lee said during a luncheon meeting with the leaders of the legislature, judiciary and government at Cheong Wa Dae. "From now on, we need to activate communication with the public and all sectors of our society to make it successful.

"The administration will make all possible efforts to raise the country's international status."

At the third G20 summit in Pittsburg, Friday, South Korea was chosen as the host country of the fifth summit in November next year. Canada will host the fourth in June.

Since early 2008, the country has sought to host the gathering, regarding it as a chance to embolden its global position and play a central role in setting up the future course of action for the global economy.

On a flight returning to Seoul, Saturday, Lee had a beer party with accompanying officials to celebrate the hosting, a presidential spokesman said.

Participants at Monday's meeting at Cheong Wa Dae included Prime Minister Han Seung-soo, National Assembly Speaker Kim Hyong-o and Chief Justice Lee Yong-hoon.

President Lee asked for their full cooperation for a successful hosting, presidential spokesman Park Sun-kyu said.

Reports said Incheon and Jeju are among the strongest candidates to host the G20, citing government sources. Park, however, dismissed the reports as groundless, saying nothing has been decided over where the event will be held.

"There are many things to consider before choosing the host city. Discussions may continue for weeks," Park told reporters.
