Top Korean, French Generals to Meet Today

Listen

Top military generals of South Korea and France will meet today in Seoul to discuss ways to improve stability in Northeast Asia following North Korea's nuclear and missile tests, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) here said Wednesday.

French Chief of Defense Staff Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin will also discuss bilateral security issues with JCS Chairman Gen. Kim Tae-young, the JCS said in a news release.

``Georgelin and Kim plan to develop practical military relations and exchanges between the countries and form a consensus on the need for peace and stability,'' it said. ``They will also exchange opinions on ways to peacefully resolve the rising tension between the Koreas.''

Georgelin will pay a courtesy call on Defense Minister Lee Sang-hee, it said.

The French general, who took office in 2006, will also visit the Demilitarized Zone between the Koreas and a monument that commemorates French soldiers who fought in the 1950-53 Korean War.
