Five workers were killed and eight were injured on Saturday evening when a heavy steel frame collapsed at a light rail transit construction site in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province.
The accident took place when a launching girder, a 30-meter-long and six-meter-wide construction machine connecting the bridge deck, fell down. Workers on the deck were buried under debris.
Policemen and firefighters rushed to the site for rescue. Four died at the site and another worker died at a hospital, Sunday. The five dead include two Vietnamese workers.
The construction site is close to Buyong Stream and an apartment complex, but no civilians were killed or injured in the accident.
Construction on the 11-kilometer Uijeongbu light rail system began two years ago and was scheduled to be finished by 2011. Work is 42-percent complete, but construction has been halted due to the accident.
