Uiwang City, located in the center of Gyeonggi Province, is expected to have its first foreign school offering curricula for pre-school children through to high school students.
According to the local government, a Rome-based Catholic organization, whose name wasn't disclosed, recently offered to build international schools in the city. The group runs about 200 schools around the world.
The school will adopt American education system principles and admit up to 50 percent of Korean nationals.
The operator plans to officially propose the establishment of the school to the provincial government.
Once the proposal is submitted, Gyeonggi will buy 33,000 square meters of land and lend it to those behind the plan. The cost of the land is estimated at 30 billion won.
According to a provincial government official, the school foundation will invest some 20 billion won for the construction of the school.
