Gwangju City has started its campaign for hosting the 2015 Summer Universiade.
In the inaugural meeting of the bid committee in Gwangju Friday, accompanied by Vice Culture Minister Shin Jae-min, Gwangju Mayor Park Kwang-tae and Lee Seung-gi, chairman of the Gwangju Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Grand National Party lawmaker Chung Eui-hwa was named the head of the committee, while Chonnam National University President Kim Yoon-soo and Chosun University President Jeon Ho-jong will work as vice chairmen.
Lee was appointed as sponsoring chairman.
Along with them, 170 people from a variety of fields, politics, economy, culture, sports and religion, were entrusted as committee members.
``In order to hold the Universiade in Gwangju, I will make big efforts to get support from the government as well as National Assembly,'' Chung, who was not present due to his schedule for the Assembly, said through a message.
``A tight bidding race is expected for the 2015 Summer Universiade because eight cities from six countries have applied for the competition,'' mayor Park said.
``We need big support and interest from people.''
Vice Minister Shin also gave a message for the city.
``Although Gwangju suffered a setback in the bid, it will work as motivation,'' he said.
``The government will roll up its sleeves in the campaign to bring the festival for the collegian athletes to Gwangju.''
The city made a declaration of its second attempt for the biennial sports competition on Sept. 22.
Gwangju failed to host the 2013 Universiade to Kazan in Russia in June.
The International University Sports Federation (FISU) will choose a venue for the 2015 event on May 23, 2009 after inspecting eight candidate cities.
