Five Monks Caught Gambling

A group of Buddhist monks were apprehended for playing poker, betting millions of won, police said, Thursday.

Boeun Police Station in North Chungcheong Province said five Buddhist monks played poker, betting more than 9 million won (about $6,700) at a hotel near Mt. Songni.

According to police, they were lodging at the hotel to participate in a nationwide Buddhist event. ``We were tipped off that a group of monks were gambling,'' a police officer said.
