The weather is expected to be freezing cold across the nation today.

The morning temperature in Seoul is to fall below zero today for the first time this year and the first snow is expected Thursday, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Monday.

``The mercury for Tuesday morning is expected to dip as low as minus 5 degrees Celsius in Seoul as a result of expanding continental high pressure,'' said KMA weatherman Lim Chang-ho. ``Most part of the peninsula will be under sub-zero temperatures as well.''

It will mark the lowest temperature this fall and weather usually seen in mid-December

``With the cold spell continuing throughout this week, we will have the first snow in Seoul Thursday,'' Lim said. ``Following the snow, it will ease up toward the weekend.''

The first snow of the year was recorded on Oct. 26 at Mt. Seorak, Gangwon Province.

KMA forecasts the cold spell in Seoul will reach its peak on Wednesday by falling to as low as minus 6 degrees.

``This is unusually cold compared with previous years,'' the weatherman said. ``People would feel a lot colder than the actual temperature, as relatively warm weather has continued since October.''

According to KMA, average morning temperature around this time hovers around one degree above zero.

Meanwhile, KMA forecasted a sudden fall in temperature in South Chungcheong Province, South Jeolla Province, Ulleung Island and Dokdo, forming ideal conditions for snowfall of between one and three centimeters.
