South Korean troops in Lebanon, working as part of a U.N. contingent there, topped a recent athletic competition involving the multinational contingent, sweeping first places in five of 11 major events, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Wednesday.

The competition, Super Power and Run Games, was held Saturday and involved 21 teams of active service members from eight nations of the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), according to Yonhap News.

"I believe our victory in the event is the fruit of the sweat and effort we of the Dongmyeong Unit shared in Lebanon, and we will continue to do our utmost to continue the tradition of being the best of the UNIFIL," Col. Kang Chan-wook, commander of the South Korean unit, was quoted as saying.

The unit, consisting of some 360 troops, has won two U.N. medals since its deployment a year ago. The UNIFIL consists of some 12,000 soldiers from 26 nations.
