The Ministry of Unification has refused to give a permit for a planned visit to North Korea by members of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers' Union, the group said Thursday.
Ministry officials said they just advised the unionists to delay their trip until the shooting death of a South Korean tourist at a North Korean tourist resort last month was clarified.
Earlier, the ministry informed civic organizations, which planned a large-scale gathering with their North Korean counterparts, that cancellation or delay was advisable.
Sixty-nine members of the union submitted applications to the ministry, July 26, for a meeting with North Korean educators near the Mt. Geumgang resort from Aug. 10-14.
The association said it will hold a press conference in front of the ministry in Seoul Friday to protest the decision.
