LS Cable said Thursday that it will commercialize smart VoD technology using signal condensing that could provide TV viewers with high-definition images using ordinary cable.

The technology is revolutionary in that it doesn't need to condense an analog signal in a hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) network to send HD level images in real time and by using it, existing 30Mbps cable can be used to a maximum of 300Mbps, the company said.

``We signed a contract with a local broadcasting station in Gangwon Province to provide 10,000 hybrid IP set-top boxes. TV viewers can see ordinary channels and IPTV programs by installing the simple device,'' Keum Dong-hee, its spokeswoman said.

LS Cable said utilizing this technology, it can reduce investment costs by 10 percent less than existing technology.
