Seoul ranked 12th in global urban competitiveness among 500 cities around the world, a survey revealed Monday.
Among Asian peers, Tokyo grabbed third place, followed by Singapore at eighth, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said in its Global Urban Competitiveness Report for 2007. New York was the most competitive city.
The Chinese government's think tank has disclosed the rankings since 2006 after analyzing major cities' industries, people, multinational cooperation, as well as living, social and business environments.
Chinese cities failed to make it into the top 40, but their competitiveness has improved ― Shanghai's ranking rose to 41st from 69th in 2006, and Beijing to 66th from 70th. Hong Kong, however, moved down to 26th from 19th.
Cities of the United States swept the ranking, with half of the top 10 cities being American. The top 10 were New York, London, Tokyo, Paris, Washington, Los Angeles, Stockholm, Singapore, San Francisco, and Chicago.
Dublin, Frankfurt, Milan, Brussels, Copenhagen and Barcelona slipped out of the top 10 this year.
The institute issued the report at the International Forum of Global Competitive Cities held in Yangzhou.
