A Texas firm is recalling about 2,850 pounds (1,300 kg) of fresh cattle heads suspected of containing specified risk materials (SRMs) associated with mad cow disease, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Friday.
"Beltex Corporation, doing business as Frontier Meats, a Fort Worth, Texas, establishment, is recalling approximately 2,850 pounds of fresh cattle heads which may contain specified risk materials (SRMs),'' the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said on its Web site.
The recalled meat was produced and packaged between May 31 2007 and June 24 this year and was supplied to retail shops in Fort Worth and Dallas, Texas.
The FSIS also said Paradise Locker Meats in Missouri is voluntarily withdrawing 120 pounds of cattle heads suspected of failing to completely remove tonsils, classified as SRMs.
SRMs refer to infective tissues that transmit mad cow disease or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
South Korea's Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fishers said Frontier Meats and Paradise Meats are not workplaces for export to South Korea.
