Nguyen Van Hien, commander of the Vietnamese Navy, paid a courtesy call on Song Young-moo, chief of Naval Operations, Tuesday to discuss ways of expanding bilateral relations, the Navy said.
The Vietnamese admiral arrived in South Korea at the invitation of the Navy for a five-day visit.
The two commanders exchanged views on matters regarding defense relations, modernization of naval forces and the reinforcement of the defense industry.
The admiral also visited the National Cemetery in Daejeon and attended a welcoming ceremony at the Gyeryongdae military headquarters in South Chungcheong Province.
During his stay, he will also meet with Defense Minister Kim Jang-soo and visit the Naval Operational Command, before leaving for Hanoi on Saturday.
The Vietnamese Navy has some 42,000 sailors, a 1,560-ton fleet and two submarines. Recently, Vietnam has been promoting military power centralized in the Navy and Air Force due to the territorial dispute between China, Taiwan and Vietnam regarding the Spratly Islands.
