Heavy snow in the Jeolla region blocked roads and caused the suspension of flight and ferry operations Sunday.

A heavy snow alert was issued for about 20 cities and counties in the North and South Jeolla provinces. Jeongeup had 22.5 centimeters of snow, with Gochang having 19 centimeters, Gwangju 18 centimeters, Imsil 12.5 centimeters and Gunsan 10 centimeters.

Along with the snow, the mercury dropped, with morning lows ranging from minus 6 degrees to minus 1 degree. The chill froze roads in mountainous areas, resulting in road blockages.

Strong gale and high seas warnings were also issued in coastal regions and islands there.

Some 70 ferries remained anchored in port, and dozens of flights were grounded at airports in Gwangju, Muan and Yeosu.

The local authorities banned people from climbing Mount Jiri and Mount Deokyu to prevent possible accidents.

The weather agency forecast up to 30 centimeters of additional snow in the region by Monday.
