Murder of Marine Premeditated

By Kim Rahn
Staff Reporter

The man who killed a marine and stole weapons plotted the crime in detail, having surveyed of the crime scene two weeks in advance, according to the military police.

The suspect Cho Yeong-guk, 35, was handed over to the military prosecution.

Cho was arrested last week for killing a marine, injuring another in Ganghwa, Gyeonggi Province, on Dec. 6, and stealing a rifle, ammunition and a hand grenade from them. The metal work major fled to his studio in Hwaseong, left the weapons there and burned the car he used in the crime in a nearby rice field.

He later abandoned the weapons under a bridge in South Jeolla Province, and left a letter describing their location in a postbox in Busan. Police identified him from fingerprints on the letter.

When caught, Cho said he committed the crime on impulse due to depression, but the military police said this was false. He later said that after he was dumped in September by a girl he had dated for 10 years, he decided to destroy himself by committing a serious crime as revenge to give her feelings of guilt.

Cho surveyed marines' duty shift times up to two weeks before the crime. On the day of crime, he waited in his car for 40 minutes for the marines to appear.

``We see the crime was plotted in advance in detail, as he made the prior survey, stole the car to use for the crime, burned it to destroy evidence, and moved across the nation to confuse the police investigation,'' an official of the military police said.

The official said that Cho testified he tried not to leave his fingerprints when writing the letter, but that he failed.

Considering Cho has failed to pay his rent for eight months, the military police suspected he stole 10 million won that he had in his possession when caught. But it was found he earned the money by selling some of his metal works.

The police also confirmed Cho's testimony that he himself put stitches in the wound on his head which he got during his fight with the injured marine. Because the wound got infected, the police gave him additional medical treatment during interrogation, the official said.
