US Defense Nominee Unsure If NK Will Give up Nuclear Ambitions

Listen

WASHINGTON _ A senior U.S. defense official on Tuesday questioned whether North Korea is willing to give up its nuclear ambitions, and stressed that Pyongyang can prove its commitment to denuclearization with its nuclear disclosure, due by the end of this month.

James Shinn, tapped as assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific security affairs, said the current troop levels in South Korea and Japan are appropriate for U.S. defense needs but would be open to continuous evaluation for increase.

"North Korea is a serious threat to the United States and to the rest of Asia," said James Shinn.
