3 Charged for Misinformation on Hostages

By Bae Ji-sook
Staff Reporter

Police Friday booked three people for distributing false information on 23 Koreans kidnapped by Taliban militants in Afghanistan on July 19.

According to the National Police Agency, 21-year-old Kim and two others on July 23 made picture files at Kim's house in Hongeun-dong, Seoul, with photographs one of the hostages had posted on her Web site.

The file explained the hostages went to Afghanistan for missionary purpose, not as medical volunteers as they had said. The file contained photographs of them singing hymns inside a Mosque. It instantly spread to not only domestic Web sites but also foreign media's sites.

However, the pictures were taken in 2005, long before this trip, which was actually to provide medical service. The three also reportedly used other people's names to distribute the articles, fearing the police might track down their IP addresses.

The three said they thought it was the hostages' fault for causing all the trouble despite government efforts to block their travel plans, so they had devised the plan to send their message.

The police initially asked for an arrest warrant, but the court turned it down as they were not considered a flight risk.
