South Korea and the United States will hold talks on potential revisions of their free trade
agreement (FTA) to reflect Washington's new trade policy guidelines, a senior negotiator said Monday.
Trade Minister Kim Hyun-chong was to visit Washington from Monday through Wednesday for the talks, Ambassador Kim Jong-hoon told lawmakers at a special parliamentary committee on the South Korea-U.S. FTA.
"The government will determine its final position after reviewing the results of Kim's visit to the U.S.," said Ambassador Kim, Korea's chief negotiator to the free trade talks.
Kim reiterated that the two sides will sign the agreement on June 30 regardless of the revisions.
South Korea and the U.S. reached the landmark trade deal in early April, and the agreement must be approved by lawmakers in both nations.
Last week, the two sides held talks after the U.S. asked South Korea to incorporate tougher labor and environment provisions into the deal before the signing, but South Korea said it wouldn't rush to accept the U.S. request.
