Park Geun-hye, a leading presidential contender of the Grand National Party (GNP), is on suspicion of having committed wrongdoings during her tenure at Yeungnam University in North Gyeongsang Province.
Jeon Jae-yong, son of former Cheong-gu University Chairman Jeon Ki-su, told reporters Thursday, ``Park was engaged in irregularities when she worked as chairwoman of the board of directors of Yeungnam University in the 1980s.’’
After merging with Daegu University, Cheong-gu was reborn as Yeungnam University.
Park assumed the post after her late father Park Chung-hee acquired Cheong-gu during his tenure as president, he said.
Jeon said Park sought to control the university by hiring acquaintances, adding that some were implicated in embezzlement of public funds and fraudulent admission of students.
He asked the GNP to look into his allegations.
Park’s spokesman Kim Jae-won, however, dismissed the allegation.
The National Assembly said in 1988 that Park was not associated with wrongdoings of high-ranking officials who worked for the university, according to Kim.
The allegation is not news, Kim said, adding Jeon failed to show concrete evidence.
In the meantime, the Roh Moo-hyun administration plans to take measures to seize the property of the Jeongsu Scholarship Foundation on the grounds that it was established with money extorted from businessmen during the 1960s.
The foundation was established by the late President Park in 1962 to mark his military coup in 1961.
In a Cabinet meeting last month, Roh ordered a thorough examination of legal issues on the possible seizure of the foundation.
