Psy's Gangnam Style wins 'Best Video' at MTV awards
BERLIN (Yonhap) -- Korean pop phenomenon Psy received a prize at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) 2012 held in the western German city of Frankfurt on Sunday (local time).
The rapper-singer claimed the Best Video award for his record-breaking hit "Gangnam Style" at the awards ceremony held at Festhalle in Frankfurt, becoming the first Korean artist to scoop a main prize at the MTV EMA Awards. After winning the prize, Psy expressed thanks for his family and all those who supported "Gangnam Style" all over the world, notably in his home country. The 34-year-old rose to international stardom after the video of "Gangnam Style" went viral on YouTube, drawing more than 700 million hits and receiving a record-breaking 4.9 million "likes" on Facebook since being released in mid-July. Boosted by the popularity of the video, the song has topped charts from 30 countries, including Britain, and has occupied the No. 2 slot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for seven straight weeks. Psy performed "Gangnam Style" at the 19th-annual MTV EMA broadcast live to 60 countries all over the world, also a first for Korean artists. T he show proved the K-pop star's global popularity as he was among the 10 world celebrities chosen to do a countdown from 10 and appeared on a special video shown at the event for honoring late U.S. pop star Whitney Houston. He has also drawn attention by performing "Gangnam Style" together with the MTV EMA's host, Germany's supermodel Heidi Klum.
