GMAT exercise 27

●Question 1. Sentence Correction

Direction: Correct the underlined part

Most insomnia is not an illness or a physical condition so much as a symptom of another problem that may simply be a reaction to certain medications, anxiety about travel, or stress before a job interview.

A. an illness or a physical condition so much as a symptom of another problem that may simply be a reaction to certain medications

B. an illness or a physical condition so much as symptomatic of another problem that may be a simple one, like a reaction caused by certain medications

C. so much an illness or a physical condition but a symptom of another problem that may be as simple as when certain medications cause a reaction

D. so much an illness or a physical condition, but it is a symptom of another problem, maybe a simple one like certain medications
causing a reaction

E. so much an illness or a physical condition but symptomatic of another problem, maybe simply a reaction to certain medications

●Question 2. Critical Reasoning

Two centuries ago, Tufe Peninsula became separated from the mainland, isolating on the newly formed Tufe Island a population of Turfil sunflowers. This population’s descendants grow to be, on average, 40 centimeters shorter than Turfil sunflowers found on the mainland. Tufe Island is significantly drier than Tufe Peninsula was. So the current average height of Tufe’s Turfil sunflowers is undoubtedly at least partially attributable to changes in Tufe’s environmental conditions.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A. There are no types of vegetation on Tufe Island that are known to benefit from dry conditions.

B. There were about as many Turfil sunflowers on Tufe Peninsula two centuries ago as there are on Tufe Island today.

C. The mainland’s environment has not changed in ways that have resulted in Turfil sunflowers on the mainland growing to be 40 centimeters taller than they did two centuries ago.

D. The soil on Tufe Island, unlike that on the mainland, lacks important nutrients that help Turfil sunflowers survive and grow tall in a dry environment.

E. The 40-centimeter height difference between the Turfil sunflowers on Tufe Island and those on the mainland is the only difference between the two populations.

●Question 3. Data Sufficiency

Directions: In this problem, a question is followed by two statements containing certain data. You are to determine whether the data provided by the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Choose the correct answer based upon the statement’s data and your knowledge of mathematics.

What is the value of a+b+c?

1) (a+b+c)^2=0

2) |a|+|b|+|c|=0

A. statement 1 alone is sufficient, but statement 2 alone is not sufficient to answer the question

B. statement 2 alone is sufficient, but statement 1 alone is not sufficient to answer the question

C. both statements taken together are sufficient to answer the question, but neither statement alone is sufficient

D. each statement alone is sufficient

E. statements 1 and 2 together are not sufficient, and additional data is needed to answer the question

●Question 4. Problem Solving

If the remainder is 7 when 85 is divided by n and the remainder is n+7 when 85 is divided by 2n, then what is the value of n?
A. 13 B. 20 C. 23 D. 26 E. 27

●Answer to Q1: A

Regardless of the idiom ‘not so much ~ as ~’, the answer choices of C, D, and E are using the unidiomatic expression ‘but’ instead of ‘as’. In B, ‘symptomatic’ next to ‘as’ is breaking the parallelism with the preceding noun phrase ‘an illness or a physical condition’. So, the answer is A.

●Answer to Q2: C

The statement is showing two premises that Turfil sunflowers of the mainland are, on average, 40 centimeters longer than those of Tufe Island and that Tufe Island is significantly drier than Tufe Peninsula was. And the conclusion of the statement is that the current average height of Tufe’s Turfil sunflowers is undoubtedly at least partially attributable to changes in Tufe’s environmental conditions. In this context, the statement is depending on the assumption that the unchanged climates basically affect the lengths of Turfil sunflowers in different locations. Only C is touching the very assumption that connects the premises with the conclusion of the statement.

●Answer to Q3: D

In the case x^2+y^2=0, |x|+|y|=0,x=y=0, since 1)a+b+c=0, sufficient 2) a=b=c=0, sufficient, therefore the best answer is D

●Answer to Q4: D

85=nQ+7, 85-7=nQ, 78=nQ, n=13, 26,78, and 85=2nP+n+7, n=26, therefore the best answer is D.
