GMAT exercise 19
●Question 1. Sentence Correction Direction: Correct the underlined part Certain pesticides can become ineffective if used repeatedly in the same place; one reason is suggested by the finding that there are much larger populations of pesticide-degrading microbes in soils with a relatively long history of pesticide use than in soils that are free of such chemicals. A. Certain pesticides can become ineffective if used repeatedly in the same place; one reason is suggested by the finding that there are much larger populations of pesticide-degrading microbes in soils with a relatively long history of pesticide use than in soils that are free of such chemicals. B. If used repeatedly in the same place, one reason that certain pesticides can become ineffective is suggested by the finding that there are much larger populations of pesticide-degrading microbes in soils with a relatively long history of pesticide use than in soils that are free of such chemicals. C. If used repeatedly in the same place, one reason certain pesticides can become ineffective is suggested by the finding that much larger populations of pesticide-degrading microbes are found in soils with a relatively long history of pesticide use than those that are free of such chemicals. D. The finding that there are much larger populations of pesticide-degrading microbes in soils with a relatively long history of pesticide use than in soils that are free of such chemicals is suggestive of one reason, if used repeatedly in the same place, certain pesticides can become ineffective. E. The finding of much larger populations of pesticide-degrading microbes in soils with a relatively long history of pesticide use than in those that are free of such chemicals suggests one reason certain pesticides can become ineffective if used repeatedly in the same place. ●Question 2. Critical Reasoning Traditionally, decision-making by managers that is reasoned step-by-step has been considered preferable to intuitive decision-making. However, a recent study found that top managers used intuition significantly more than did most middle- or lower-level managers. This confirms the alternative view that intuition is actually more effective than careful, methodical reasoning. The conclusion above is based on which of the following assumptions? A. Methodical, step-by-step reasoning is inappropriate for making many real-life management decisions. B. Top managers have the ability to use either intuitive reasoning or methodical, step-by-step reasoning in making decisions. C. The decisions made by middle- and lower-level managers can be made as easily by using methodical reasoning as by using intuitive reasoning. D. Top managers use intuitive reasoning in making the majority of their decisions. E. Top managers are more effective at decision-making than middle- or lower-level managers. ●Question 3. Data Sufficiency Directions: In this problem, a question is followed by two statements containing certain data. You are to determine whether the data provided by the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Choose the correct answer based upon the statement’s data and your knowledge of mathematics. K is a list of integers, what is the standard deviation of the list of numbers? 1) The median of them is 1. 2) The range of them is 0. A. statement 1 alone is sufficient, but statement 2 alone is not sufficient to answer the question B. statement 2 alone is sufficient, but statement 1 alone is not sufficient to answer the question C. both statements taken together are sufficient to answer the question, but neither statement alone is sufficient D. each statement alone is sufficient E. statements 1 and 2 together are not sufficient, and additional data is needed to answer the question ——————————————————————— ●Answer to Q1: A In B and C, the preceding participle ‘used’ is connected with the subject ‘one reason’, which can’t be the target of modification in terms of a logical meaning. And to introduce a clause, the conjunction ‘that’ is needed right next to ‘one reason’ in D as well as in E. So, the answer is A. ●Answer to Q2: E The assumption needs to cover the logical gap between the fact that top managers used intuition significantly more than did most middle- or lower-level managers and the conclusion that intuition can actually be more effective than careful, methodical reasoning. So, if top managers aren’t effective at decision-making than middle- or lower-level managers, the conclusion can’t be drawn as such. In this context, E is showing the very assumption that can link the fact and the conclusion. ●Answer to Q3: C f(root2)=f(1.4xx)=1, f(root5)=f(2.xxx)=2, and f(root7)=f(2.xxx)=2, therefore f(root2)+f(root5)+f(root7)=1+2+2=5, the best answer is C. |
